Way to Go, Kinlee!!!

At the end of the school year last week, 1st graders met in the cafeteria for Accelerated Reader awards. Parker's grade did not do awards this year for AR - the teachers said they were so busy focusing on achievement testing that they were not able to encourage and motivate the kids to participate in AR quite as much. Kinlee did very well, though. If you'll allow me a moment to "brag"... She ranked 8th in her grade for # of points, 1st in her class for 3 of points, and received the "Chapter Chompers" award for the most chapter books read and tested. We are very proud of her! Way to go, Kinlee!!! The kids are both enrolled in the local library Summer Reading program. Neither of my kids have ever been "recreational" readers (maybe Kinlee more than Parker), but this program has definitely changed that the past few days. Below is a picture I caught of them out in the backyard reading some of the new books they had gotten earlier in the day. I think Kinlee is up to 70 books read, and Parker is up to 50. Turn anything into a competition, and they are sold! We have already received some pretty cool prizes and gift certificates for their efforts. Good job, guys!!!

I LOVE the picture of them reading. I've never been much of a "recreational reader" myself and pray my boys do not take after me! :)

We are about to sign up for our program too! Hannah has to read 20 books by July 23 and Benjamin has to read 10. These books have to be on their reading level-- so they have to be fairly lengthy chapter books. Hannah is at a mid-year 4th grade level and Benjamin is probably at high school level. They love doing this every summer!!

All of my kids (including all of my extras) are doing the summer reading program here. Mine love to read and now when I say lets read some books, Cade says, "is it a library book?" He wants as many as he can get! Mine have all reached the number needed to get their ice creams and happy meals. They are happy! We still have a little ways to go with my extra people but we hope to be there soon!

The picture of them on the bench is really sweet!

I love the reading program, too. I have to admit, we don't quite get the highest leveled books that fit their reading levels. I checked with the librarian on that and she said that they are just trying to reach a goal of 10,000 books read by the end of June. SO, they basically said check out as many as you can and get them read!! Kinlee had a couple of chapter books, but the rest are just good-lenghted story books. I did draw the line on some of the shorter ones they tried to get away with (can't blame them for trying):)
